Pittsburgh 70, Howard 46: Tray Woodall and Lamar Patterson scored 15 points each and the Panthers pulled away from the visiting Bison in the second half.
The Panthers (6-1) scored 14 of the first 20 points of the second half – eight by Talib Zanna – and raised their intensity defensively to seize control. Zanna finished with 12 points and eight rebounds.
Howard shot 50 percent from the field in the opening 20 minutes to hang around, but Patterson made four of his five 3-pointers as the Panthers pulled away. The Bison (1-6) were within 23-22 before Pittsburgh scored 13 of the last 19 points to take a 36-28 halftime lead.
Freshman James Robinson chipped in with 11 points and eight assists for Pittsburgh, which had 19 assists and only nine turnovers. Patterson added five assists.
Simuel Frazier led Howard, playing its fourth game in eight days, with 12 points while and Alphonso Leary and Mike Phillips had 10.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Pittsburgh coach Jamie Dixon suspended reserve swingman Trey Zeigler indefinitely after he was cited for driving under the influence early Sunday. … Howard had seven blocked shots in the first half and 11 for the game. … Pittsburgh has won 117 of its last 121 games against non-conference opponents at home in the regular season.
