HOUSTON, Dec 23 (Reuters) – Equipment malfunctioned at Exxon
Mobil Corp.’s 238,600 barrel per day (bpd) Joliet,
Illinois, refinery on Saturday, triggering the refinery’s safety
flare, according to a notice the refinery filed with Illinois
state pollution regulators.
The flaring at the Exxon refinery released nitrogen dioxide
and sulfur dioxide, according to the notice filed with the
Illinois Emergency Management Agency.
A refinery uses its safety flare when hydrocarbons cannot be
processed normally due to a malfunction or planned work.
