The baseball game between Walter Payton College Preparatory High School and Gwendolyn Brooks College Preparatory Academy was rescheduled again, this time for May 11.
Last weekend, Payton’s baseball team forfeited the originally scheduled game. Payton’s coach William Wittleder told several news outlets that parents didn’t want their sons to travel to Brooks’ home field in the Roseland neighborhood on the city’s Far South Side.
Payton’s principal said the game was actually forfeited because of “leadership issues within the baseball program” and that the school, which draws students from throughout the city, had no problem playing at Brooks. District officials said the coach failed to order a bus and said several Payton players could not play because they’d missed practice to prepare for tests or because of college visits.
The game was reset for this Saturday at Brooks. But on Tuesday, Chicago Public Schools spokeswoman Kelley Quinn said a conflict forced a move to 7 p.m. May 11.
District officials said Wittleder continues to coach Payton’s team.
