First lady Michelle Obama will be in Chicago on Thursday to join Mayor Rahm Emanuel and his wife, Amy Rule, in visiting Urban Alliance Chicago, a career and employment program for high school seniors, White House officials said.
Obama has stepped up efforts this year to highlight programs that help Chicago youths pursue productive careers and avoid violence.
Urban Alliance Chicago has been of particular interest to Rule, who made a rare appearance at a program event in December and gave her first public interview there.
The yearlong career education and employment program includes paid internships, training and mentoring.
In its first year in Chicago, Urban Alliance worked with about 70 students from six public high schools in south and southwest neighborhoods, the White House said in its announcement Monday. The program plans to double student participation during the coming school year.
