Dear Tom,

I assume that in terms of average percent of possible sunshine, November ranks as the dreariest of months in Chicago. Where does Decemberstandon the list?

— Tom Gregg,Niles

Dear Tom,

Neither month is big on sunshine, but December actually edges out November for the city’s dreariest month title by 1 percent — recording just 39 percent of its possible sunshine compared with November’s 40 percent. Annually the city logs 54 percent of its possible sunshine buoyed by June and July, which both average 68 percent. To put Chicago’s sunshine in perspective, one of the sunniest spots in the U.S. is Yuma, Ariz., which typically logs more than 90 percent of its possible sunshine annually, with Juneau, Alaska, one of the dreariest, with just 30 percent.
