Jerry and Mary Jane Rees have longstanding community roots. In 1960, they established Rees Funeral Home and in 1985 bought Olson Funeral Home in Portage.

The Reeses were very active in their communities until their retirement in 1990. At that time, James J. Krause, a longtime employee, and Patricia Rees, Jerry and Mary Jane’s daughter, purchased the funeral homes. In 1993, they acquired Brady Funeral Home in Lake Station, and in 2005, opened Winfield Funeral Home.

Due to the increased caseload of Patricia Rees’ law practice, she retired from management in 2001, but remains financially involved in Winfield. Krause and son Josh, daughter Julie, and daughter-in-law Tory, remain dedicated to providing the communities with the service-oriented tradition of a family-owned and operated business.

The owners and staff of Rees Funeral Home understand that most of us make funeral arrangements only once or twice in a lifetime and that the procedure is normally unfamiliar and disquieting. It is their purpose to make this experience as comfortable as possible under the difficult conditions of the moment.

“We are conscious of the fact that the decisions you are making are important to you and your family, and will be for many years to come,” according to the Rees’ family. “We realize that your one-time opportunity to make satisfactory and comforting decisions rests partly on our ability to properly inform you about your options and we accept this responsibility as a sacred trust.”
