The village of Skokie and Niles Township participated for the first time in the Stand Against Racism, a national initiative that raises awareness that racism cannot be tolerated and ignored.
Participants on April 24 included more than 80 Evanston, Skokie and Niles Township community organizations, business, schools and faith groups.
The YWCA Evanston/North Shore was the local sponsor. Its fourth annual “Stand Against Racism” took place in Evanston on Ridge Avenue.
In Skokie, fire department personnel placed its aerial fire truck across from Skokie Village Hall at 5127 Oakton St. A large American flag flew from the tip of the aerial ladder as passing motorists honked in support. Participants held signs or stood quietly by the curb. Some talked about why they were there.
“I’m here to support the cause,” said Brian McHugh of Niles whose dark sunglasses reflected Skokie Village Hall.
“By moving forward, we can learn mistakes from our past,” McHugh said. “That’s why events like this are important.”
Will Evans, a 30-year Skokie resident, stood near McHugh along the curb sidewalk area. Evans is the chairman of the Skokie Human Relations Commission and has been in that role for two years.
“Stand against racism, it’s real simple,” Evans said. “I don’t think people really realize how diverse Skokie is.”
Susan Van Dusen, a 40-year resident of Skokie, is the mayor’s wife and a longtime Niles Township volunteer.
“This is our way to make public even more our stand against racism in society,” she said.
“I’m very happy, the turnout is good, the weather has been cooperative… it’s the culmination of months and months of preparation,” said her husband Mayor George Van Dusen. “It really tells everything about what the village of Skokie is about, peace and harmony and enjoying the integrity of each and every person.”
Karen Singer, president/CEO of the YWCA Evanston/North Shore, joined her Skokie neighbors that morning.
“Skokie has been a partner for many years with us, working on issues of racial equity and justice,” Singer said.
