An Oakton Elementary School teacher injured his hand Tuesday this morning while trying to put out a fire in a microwave oven in the teachers’ lounge, Evanston fire officials said.

Evanston Fire Department officials said emergency dispatchers received a call about 8:24 a.m. of a fire in the teacher’s lounge at the school, 436 Ridge Ave.

By the time firefighters arrived, the fire was already extinguished, and firefighters spent time at the scene clearing out the smoke, said Division Chief Dwight Hohl.

Hohl said the fire apparently started as one of the school’s teachers was preparing food in the microwave.

“They were able to disconnect it and put the fire out,” he said. “It wasn’t anything big, but in the process the teacher burned his hand.”

The teacher, who wasn’t identified, took himself across the street to Saint Francis Hospital, at 355 Ridge Ave., for treatment, Hohl said.
