]Johnston Street in Highland could receive a face lift next year, if the Town Council decides to put some of its gambling take toward it.
The council during its Monday evening study session discussed the project that would reconstruct Johnston Street from Ridge Road to LaPorte Street. Additionally, more gambling revenue could be used toward completing construction at 45th Avenue and 5th Street, said Public Works Director John Bach.
Bach is asking for a total of $57,468 for both projects. The Town of Highland normally gets $200,000 in gambling revenue.
The Town Theatre Board should also start being able to use its own money toward projects and issues it has. The Town Council has been managing the theater’s money until it receives its not-for-profit status, which it did recently, Highland Clerk-Treasurer Michael Griffin said.
Currently, the theater has $14,850 raised through memberships, $3,185 through one donor, $1,910 through other donations and $9,325 it raised through its comedy fundraiser in the spring. Other than the board having to pay for the expense of the fundraiser, the money will be theirs, Griffin said.
The Town Council will meet at 7 p.m. Monday, Aug. 11 at Town Hall to take up these matters.
