As the mother of a resident at the Shapiro Developmental Center in Kankakee, a state operated facility, I know that a state employee’s strike or lockout could endanger the lives of hundreds of very vulnerable people whose families are unable to care for them. Many people at these facilities need help to eat, bathe, and dress. If you cannot solve your differences, at least pass SB 1229 so either sides could ask for binding arbitration, our only solution if you cannot put aside your differences and reach a compromise that will protect our severely developmentally disabled citizens.
