Sandburg’s girls golf team didn’t mind keeping its distance Saturday.
From the rest of the competition, that is.
Producing two of the top three individuals, the Eagles (314) held a 15-stroke advantage in winning the Joliet Township Invitational at Inwood.
Downers Grove North was second and Naperville North (336) third among the 15 scoring squads.
“This was our first meet of the year, and to be honest, I was very happy with how they did,” Sandburg coach Todd Allen said. “There were a lot of good teams there and the girls did a really nice job.”
Emilyee McGiles led the Eagles with a 4-over 71 that was second only to Lincoln-Way Central’s Bri Bolden (68).
“She played really well,” Allen said of McGiles. “It was a direct reflection of the time and effort she put in over the summer. She hit the ball really solid, putted well, and didn’t make big mistakes.”
Emily Cosler (76) added a third-place finish for Sandburg, which also received contributions from Erin Cronin (83) and Hannah Kilbane (84).
“I was really proud of the effort (Cosler) had,” Allen said. “She really had to grind it out. Off the tee, she was a little unsure of herself. She had to get up and down a lot to save par, and did a good job with that.”
Downers North’s Courtney Katz (78) and Naperville North’s Mara Flaherty (79) rounded out the top five individuals.
Lincoln-Way Central (337) was fourth in the team standings, the Knights’ performance aided by Grace Curran (83). York (363) came in fifth, followed by St. Ignatius (376) and Lincoln-Way West (398).
