Satellite imagery featuring a swirling cloud mass over the northern High Plains late Saturday lent credence to computer forecasts suggesting a return of windy, cool weather. The cold front associated with this system will pass the area during the midday hours Sunday, bringing gusty west winds.

Temperatures more typical of mid-September are expected Monday through Wednesday. During this period, generally clear skies at night will allow lows to dip to the upper 40s in outlying suburban locations, while downtown readings hold near 60 degrees. Despite this cooling, medium-range forecasts hint that summertime warmth is to return. The core of hot air that has persisted over the western U.S. is expected to shift to the central part of the country next weekend.
