
Michael Young scored 25 points and Pittsburgh held off a late Notre Dame rally to beat the Irish 86-82 on Saturday at Purcell Pavilion.
The No. 24 Panthers (14-1, 3-0 ACC) led by 18 points midway through the second half. Notre Dame (10-5, 1-2) got within two points with less than two minutes to go, but couldn’t complete the comeback.
Demetrius Jackson scored 26 points to lead Notre Dame. Steve Vasturia and Bonzie Colson both scored 13 points. Zach Auguste had 12 points and five rebounds, but fouled out with 5:52 remaining.
Pittsburgh led by 79-68 with 5:05 remaining. The Irish then went on a 9-0 run. Vasturia made a layup to bring the team within 79-77 with 1:56 to go.
The Irish still trailed by two points with 4.6 seconds remaining. James Robinson made two free throws to seal the win for Pittsburgh.
Jamel Artis made five 3-pointers on the way to scoring 19 points for the Panthers, who won their 10th consecutive game. Sheldon Jeter added 18 points in the win.
