A Lake Station man faces federal charges after admitting he trafficked 3 kilograms of cocaine, according to a probable cause affidavit.

The affidavit, filed Monday in the U.S. District Court in Hammond, says that U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration agents followed Jose Luis Romero, driving a green Toyota Carolla, on Saturday from his home in the 2300 block of Cass Street to the intersection of 116th Street and Indianapolis Boulevard in Whiting, where they saw him get into another car, a silver Mitsubishi, which drove back to his house.

Agents then watched him leave the passenger seat of the car and enter another car, this time a blue Pontiac G6, and grab a package, according to the affidavit.

He then got back in the Mitsubishi, which dropped him off at DeKalb Street and Central Avenue, less than a mile away from Romero’s house.

Agents pulled over the driver of the Mitsubishi, who was not identified, and discovered 3 kilograms of cocaine in the car. They also arrested Romero, who admitted to dealing the drugs and to also having another 1 kilogram of cocaine at his house, along with a gun, both of which police found during a later search, a court document said.

According to the complaint, he faces charges of knowingly distributing cocaine and knowingly possessing with the intent to distribute cocaine.

Romero is being held without bond pending a probable cause and detention hearing set for Thursday, according to court records.
