There, for just a moment, Riley Curry was any shy 3 1/2-year-old entering a packed room full of strangers.
But then, wiley veteran that she is, she quickly put on her game face. After all, the occasion was the presentation of her second NBA MVP award (entrusted with her father, Stephen Curry, for now). She has been here before and knows the drill, so experience kicked in.
This time, she let all the reporters gathered in the room for the presentation of the MVP trophy know that she was watching them. It was adorable and yet a little scary.
Riley has been letting her father’s play do the talking for her ever since she emerged as a full-blown star during the press conferences that accompanied the Golden State Warriors’ run to the NBA title last year. She’s been busy, turning 3 last summer and welcoming a little sister, Ryan. She’s also been contemplating a run for the presidency, her father says, “as soon as she’s eligible.”
“Her platform will be more cookies for everybody, plus free Whip/Nae Nae instructions,” Steph Curry told ESPN last fall. “And everybody would be required to know, word for word, the lines to that Disney [Channel] movie ‘[The] Descendants.’ That would be the pledge of allegiance, or maybe the national anthem. I’d vote for her, especially if Kanye’s on the ticket. It’d be a fun country.”
She’s the star of the family and even her father admits it. Just watch how tightly she grips her father’s MVP trophies.
“She’s got a great sense of humor,” Steph told Parents magazine recently. “. . .If we go somewhere without her, the first question people ask us is, ‘Where’s Riley?'”
On Tuesday, it looks for a moment as if baby sister Ryan was coming for Riley, but she quickly shut her down with a forearm shiver as the family posed with the trophies.
And, yeah, she is always watching.
