Grant Miller has had and up-down-season for Crown Point.
The No.1 player for the Bulldogs said he started the year a little rough.
But Miller was there for Crown Point when it needed him most.
In Wednesday’s Duneland Athletic Conference Meet, Miller shot a 1-over-par 73 to lead the Bulldogs to victory at Brassie Golf Club. Crown Point finished with 304, while Chesterton was second with 310. The Trojans won the overall conference title after finishing undefeated in dual play.
Miller, an Eastern Illinois recruit, said it has worked out nicely for his team.
Crown Point also outlasted Saturday’s rugged field at Palmira Golf Club in the Lou Iaconetti Memorial.
“We have really bonded as a team,” Miller said. “We have really pushed each other at practice. We are just playing well together.”
Miller finished with four birdies and five bogeys.
He got his confidence going on No. 6, which was his second hole, when he salvaged par after knocking his approach shot past the green.
Miller hit his chip to within a foot of the cup.
The Bulldogs got another solid round from Sam Amodeo. Amodeo, Crown Point’s No. 4 golfer, shot 75. On Saturday, Amodeo earned medalist honors when he shot even-par 72.
Crown Point coach Jonathan Haas said Amodeo is comfortable now.
“I think he’s found his happy place on the golf course,” Haas said.
Haas is feeling real good about his team now. The victory was the fourth tournament title for Crown Point.
The highest score that CP counted was an 80 by Roenick Rex. Yianni Kostouros finished with a 76.
“I love these kids,” Haas said. “They are real focused and real unselfish. They are genuinely excited for their teammates when they do well.”
For conference champion Chesterton, it was a bittersweet day.
Mitch Davis took medalist honors by shooting 71. But overall, the Trojans didn’t play well.
Both Mike Zondor and Eric Richardson shot 81, which were the final two scores that Chesterton counted.
Kyle Krol finished with a 77 to round out the scoring.
Chesterton coach Kent Butler wasn’t particularly pleased even though he said it was the first time since 2009 that the Trojans had won conference.
Getting beat on its own course by a team that the Trojans had defeated twice during the season didn’t sit well.
“I feel like we backed into it a little,” Butler said of the conference title. “Give credit to Crown Point.”
For Davis, the ball striking was great. The putting was not good.
He finished with 35 putts. Davis had three three-putts.
“I’d be in the 60s if it weren’t for my putting,” Davis said.
Aaron Skibinski of Michigan City finished second with a 72.
