Joey Purp didn’t know he was going to play his own set at Lollapalooza until just a few days ago. We caught up with the Chicago rapper backstage at the festival where he revealed why he didn’t tell his mother about his rap career until this year.
This is what Tribune critic Greg Kot had to say about the 22-year-old’s afternoon set Friday:
“Cameos have been all the rage among the bevy of Chicago hip-hop artists who have played the festival so far, but Joey Purp ups the ante when he brings out Twista, the ’90s hitmaker who helped builded a foundation for today’s generation of millennial stars. As the set winds down, Towkio gets a chance to reprise ‘G W M,’ which closed the rapper’s Lolla performance yesterday. Purp is a last-minute addition to the Lolla lineup and his slot on the vast Perry’s stage isn’t ideal, as this is the festival’s party zone. Purp’s latest, ‘iiiDrops,’ shows him reaching new levels of depth as a lyricist, but Perry’s isn’t the place to get philosophical or political. The MC touches on some of his deeper themes, though it’s clear his primary aim is to keep the crowd jumping with less complicated rhythms and lyrics. Here’s hoping he gets another shot on the festival stage in a setting more conducive to his multifaceted music.”
