Aurora collected 42,000 pounds of electronics during a recycling event July 30.

Due to the success of the program, the city may hold more electronics recycling events in the future. That was the word from Aurora Mayor Tom Weisner in talking to aldermen during a City Council Committee of the Whole meeting.

The mayor pointed out that the items collected will be kept out of landfills.

About 27,000 pounds of the electronics brought in for recycling were screens from televisions and computers, which Weisner said are among “the most important things to recycle.”

The city used to do fairly frequent electronics recycling events, but stopped doing them because of the expense – a common situation with other government and even private recyclers, city officials said.

Even last year, the city did 16 events and collected more than 250,000 pounds of electronics. That’s why 42,000 pounds for one event was considered a lot, officials said.

“So, it was very, very successful,” Weisner said.
