Elgin City Council candidate petitions available

Petitions for candidates for the 2017 Elgin municipal election are now available in the City Clerk’s office, Room 202, 150 Dexter Court, Elgin.

Four seats on the city council will be up for election, according to a City Clerk’s press release. Each term is for four years. Qualifications are: be a registered voter in the city of Elgin, be an Elgin resident for at least one year prior to the election and not in arrears in payment of taxes or other indebtedness due to the city, the release stated.

Petitions for nominations must be filed with the City Clerk’s office no sooner than 8 a.m. Monday, Nov. 21 and no later than 5 p.m. Monday, Nov. 28. The placement of names on the ballot will be in the order of filing, the release stated.

A Consolidated Primary Election will only be required if more than 16 electors file their candidacy for the four Councilmember terms up for election, according to the release. If a Consolidated Primary Election is necessary, it will be held on Feb. 28. The Consolidated General Election will be held on April 4.

First Friday Improv with The GreenRoom

Improv returns to Downtown Elgin’s First Friday. The GreenRoom’s comedy is 100 percent clean and 99.27 percent hilarious. It’s 90 minutes of improv a la “Whose Line Is It Anyway,” according to a press release.

The next First Friday performance at 8 p.m. Sept. 2 at the Hemmens Cultural Center Theater in the Round, 45 Symphony Way, Elgin. The cost is $15 for adults and $12 students and seniors. Tickets will be available in advance, or day of at the Box Office. The Box Office will open at 5 p.m. for the performance. For information, call 847-931-5900.

A.A.U.W. hosts potluck and diversity program

The Elgin Area Branch of American Association of University Women (A.A.U.W.) will have its first general meeting of the 2016-17 year on Thursday at St. Hugh of Lincoln Episcopal Church, 36W957 Highland Ave. in Elgin, at the corner of Randall Road and Highland Avenue.

The September meeting, which is open to members and potential members, will begin at 5:30 p.m. with a potluck supper consisting of foods from around the world, according to a news release. The program following the meal, “A Case of Five Continents,” will focus on understanding and valuing diverse cultures.

A.A.U.W. is open to all graduates having Associate or Baccalaureate degrees from accredited colleges and universities. Students currently enrolled in a regionally accredited educational institution are eligible for a student membership.

Kane County property taxes due

Kane County Treasurer David Rickert reminds taxpayers that the second installment of property taxes is due Sept. 1.

Property owners can print off a copy of their bill to make a payment, it is available on the treasurer’s website, KaneCountyTreasurer.org or contact Rickert’s office at 630-232-3565, according to a press release.

Payments can be made by mail to the Treasurer’s Office, 719 S. Batavia Ave., Geneva, 60134 or at the property tax drop box, available 24 hours a day, behind Building A at the Government Center, 719 S. Batavia Ave., Geneva or at a participating Kane County bank. A list of banks is at KaneCountyTreasurer.org, the release states. Payments are also accepted online, by credit card or E-check. There is a convenience fee.

Forest programs help preschoolers explore natural world

Fish, insects, nature’s harvest and turkeys, will be the themes for this fall’s Forest Preserve District of Kane County nature programs for preschoolers, according to a press release.

“Nature Tykes” lets 3-year olds explore the natural world through a variety of activities with their parent or caregiver. Stories, nature hikes, songs, games and crafts are combined in themed sessions held each month, the release stated. Themes include insect wonderland on Sept. 22, nature’s harvest on Nov. 17 and turkey trot on Nov. 17. Sessions run from 9:30 to 10:15 a.m. at Creek Bend Nature Center, LeRoy Oakes Forest Preserve at 37W700 Dean St., Saint Charles, the release stated. Registration is $5 per child, per session.

“Little Naturalists” is an hour-long program for 4 to 5 year olds. Children will discover the wonders of nature through a variety of activities including songs, hikes, stories, games and crafts. This program is for the young participants. Parents, caregivers and siblings can walk the trails of LeRoy Oakes Forest Preserve, or wait inside the nature center, during the program.
