On Sept. 21, schools around the world performed the song “Light a Candle for Peace,” including Alcuin Montessori School in Oak Park.

Alcuin students also performed the song in American sign language and participated in theatrical performances as part of the United Nations International Day of Peace.

“The day really consisted of singing and [the students’] thoughts of peace,” Head of School Gina Gleason said. “The peace curriculum is a huge part of Montessori in general, so it’s a nice way to capture the approach we have in the classrooms that is one of our core values. It’s nice to celebrate that.”

In the weeks leading up to the day, students worked on messages of peace and created pieces of art to hang around the school.

Students ages 2-14 joined more than 100,000 other children around the world in celebrating the day, school officials said.

“There are 24 hours of singing of ‘Light a Candle for Peace’ across the world,” Gleason said. “We were assigned a time of 10 a.m. to keep that 24 hours of song happening throughout the world’s schools. It’s pretty fun to be a part of that.”

According to Gleason, Alcuin’s 140 students took part in the event.
