Waukegan police announced Friday that a man they considered armed and dangerous who was being sought this week on an arrest warrant for two armed robberies in November has been apprehended by Chicago police, and local detectives were set to bring him back to Lake County.
According to Waukegan Cmdr. Joe Florip, 30-year-old Daniel J. O’Brien was taken into custody by Chicago police on Thursday. Bail in the arrest warrant announced for O’Brien was set at $500,000.
Described by police as homeless, O’Brien was wanted in connection with a Nov. 22 robbery at midnight where a man entered Murphy’s gas station, in the 3800 block of Fountain Square and robbed the employee at gunpoint, Florip said.
O’Brien also faces charges for an earlier armed robbery on the same day when police said a man with a gun walked into a BP Amoco the 2900 block of Belvidere Road around 7 p.m. and demanded money from an employee, he said.
According to Florip, O’Brien’s first court date was not immediately available, and there were no details of his arrest in Chicago. He added that there were no charges filed by Chicago police.
“We wanted to get this out so the community would know,” Florip said
Earlier this week, a joint announcement by the Waukegan and Gurnee police departments and the Lake County Sheriff’s Office detailed the arrest of two other men in connection with several armed robberies.
David Franklin, 43, of the 00 block of Washington Park, was being held on $750,000 bail on armed robbery charges related to five Waukegan cases and two Gurnee cases, Florip said. Rafael Mallory, 55, of the same address was being held on $500,000 bail on armed robbery charges related to two of Waukegan cases, a Lake Villa case and two Gurnee cases, he said.
The three arrests accounted for nine armed robberies reported in November and December, police report.
