Barrington firefighters responded Sunday to a structure fire in an unoccupied and vacant house.
Neighbors saw fire and smoke coming from the side of the home in the 200 block of West Russell Street and called 911 shortly after noon, according to a Monday morning fire department release.
Firefighters initially extinguished flames on the home’s front and side exteriors, stopping the blaze in just under 2 hours.
Assistant Fire Chief Bruce Peterson said the fire had reached the home’s walls and attic when responders first arrived.
“The fire could have been worse. Eventually, we made a hole outside a second-floor wall and got guys inside,” he said.
“The stairwell had already burned,” he said, adding that property loss was not yet known.
There were no injuries to firefighters or residents, according to the release. Firefighters from the neighboring departments of Barrington Countryside, Long Grove, Palatine Rural, Cary, Fox River Grove and Palatine assisted.
The cause of the fire is undetermined and currently being investigated by the Barrington Fire Department, Illinois State Fire Marshall and Barrington Police Department.
