If the Gary Redevelopment Commission can raise $7,500 in donations by March 15, it will tell the city’s story by leading tours that highlight historically-significant buildings.

The Indiana Housing and Community Development Authority will match the $7,500, allowing the placement of banners along Broadway for the walking tours of 10 specific downtown sites, said Joseph Van Dyk, commission director. City Hall at 401 Broadway and the 504 Broadway building that once was the Gary State Bank are possible sites, along with the old Post Office and the one-time Gary train station, he said.

Tour details have yet to be set, but officials said in a statement, “through the tours, you will be embraced in Gary’s story, learn the importance of historic preservation and help to reimage Gary’s brand as a vibrant, walkable environment.”

Officials said plans, for now, call for two-hour guided walking tours on two dates and a third date that would be an all-day open house.

Van Dyk said the commission currently has two interns being paid by AmeriCorps VISTA who will be helping to coordinate the tours and the fundraising.
