El Día de los Ninos, a celebration of children, will be held Saturday at Vaughan Athletic Center, 2121 Indian Trail Road in Aurora.

The event, presented by the Aurora Hispanic Heritage Advisory Board, is free and open to the public. It will run from 1 to 5 p.m.

“El Día de los Ninos is a wonderful opportunity to celebrate the value that children bring to our lives and to our community,” said Adrienne Merced-Holloway, the advisory board’s chairwoman, in a press release about the event. “But it also give us at the Aurora Hispanic Heritage Advisory Board and our stakeholders an opportunity to really connect with them and their parents to share worthwhile academic information and community resources.”

The event will feature activities for kids in honor of Children’s Day, which is celebrated throughout Latin America to honor children and their contributions to the community.

Children can also bounce around in giant inflatables, touch a fire truck and police cruiser, check out a book from the bookmobile, and get a checkup from the Alivo Medical Center Mobile Health Unit, according to the release. New this year is a gaming truck provided by Countrywide Financial along with other activities to spark children’s interest in the science, technology, engineering, arts and math fields, organizers said.

Stage entertainment will include the comedy play “Puff,” by Jesus Serrano, and performances by Ballet Folklorico, the Greenman Elementary School Choir and Kimberly Moorman, and a presentation by the East Aurora JROTC.

Nonprofit partners will be on hand to share information with parents on all of the programs they offer to families, including the Girl Scouts of Northern Illinois, the Aurora Public Library, the Fox Valley Orchestra, Family Focus, Sci-Tech Hands-on Museum, the Aurora Police and Fire Departments and others.
