Los Angeles-based salad chain Sweetgreen is betting on Chicago, with a second location opening in the Loop on Tuesday, and two more expected to open in the West Loop and near Millennium Park this year.

Location expansions happen all the time, so this development is rather routine, except that 100 percent of Sweetgreen’s proceeds from opening day will directly benefit Growing Power. The local organization helps provide access to high-quality, healthy and affordable food in underserved communities. When it originally entered the Chicago market, Sweetgreen donated $40,000 to the group, which added a former CTA bus to its fleet of mobile markets as a result. Growing Power also sells produce to the salad chain’s local spots.

The second location, at 1 N. Dearborn St., is smack dab in the center of Loop foot traffic, making it a smart choice for office workers looking for a healthy lunch option. Housed in a building built in 1905, the new location will have higher ceilings, with an open area showcasing the brand’s approach to transparent food prep.
