I wanted to let you know that your Friday editorial “Your income tax hike? Now. Reforms? Maybe later — maybe” was one of the most concise, on-the-target explanations for the real outcome of the vote on the tax hike.
I have recommended to state Rep. David Harris that he read or re-read your work to understand that, essentially, we have a permanent tax hike with little substantive change to government structure and policy.
I am at a loss, though, as to why the possibility of a temporary tax hike with a meaningful review after three or so years was not an alternative.
I recall the temporary increase of a few years ago that produced little change in the financial picture for the state. But at least it showed how more money only allows more spending on projects deemed important or wanted. It is difficult to see why that philosophy will not be found in this current increase.
