Red, Brown and Purple line trains were stopped at the Fullerton station for three hours during the morning rush Tuesday after a man jumped into the path of a train in an apparent suicide, according to police and fire officials.

The body of the man, believed to be in his 40s, was discovered on the tracks at Fullerton around 6:30 a.m., police said. Trains were halted until 9:30 a.m. as detectives and fire crews finished working the scene, officials said.

“Detectives believe it to be suicide,” police said in a statement.

Red Line service was suspended between Belmont and North/Clybourn, while Brown Line trains were stopped between Wellington and Merchandise Mart, the CTA said.

Shuttle buses ran between North/Clybourn and Belmont, CTA spokesman Steve Mayberry said.

The agency also recommended six CTA bus routes as alternatives: 22 Clark, 29 State, 36 Broadway, 77 Belmont, 147 Outer Drive Express and the 151 Sheridan.

Riders reported packed stations and crowded buses.

At 8:50 a.m., the CTA tweeted this advice to commuters: “If you connect to Red, Brwn or Prpl lines from west, consider taking bus west or south & use Blue Ln to reach downtown to avoid disruption.”
