Less than 50 miles southeast of Chicago is a 15-mile stretch of shifting sands and towering dunes formed over the centuries by the forces of nature. The Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore was established as a federal park by Congress in 1966 after a 50-year struggle by conservationists.
