A man exchanged gunfire with two robbers in the back of a South Side home in Englewood on Tuesday night, and when it was over, the man had a wound to his leg and one of the robbers was dead, according to Chicago police.
The man, 22, was in a home in the 1500 block of West 71st Street when two men approached and tried to rob him around 8 p.m., police said.
The man and the robbers fired at each other, and the man was struck in the leg. He was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, where his condition was stabilized.
One of the robbers, 23-year-old Robert Ward, was struck in the left side, according to police and the Cook County medical examiner’s office.
Ward was pronounced dead at Advocate Christ Medical Center at 8:41 p.m. He lived on the block where he was shot.
An autopsy Wednesday determined Ward died of a gunshot wound of the left arm into the torso and his death was a ruled a homicide.
No other injuries were reported.
Police remained at the home for several hours after the shooting, entering and leaving a red brick bungalow that was roped off with crime scene tape. A white Audi rested in front of the house, its engine still running, its headlights on.
Around the corner, a white sign was nailed to a tree with purple lettering, decorated with painted handprints. It read, “No shooting zone.”
The two were among five people shot in Chicago since about noon Tuesday.
* Around 7:45 p.m. on the West Side, a 26-year-old man was wounded in the 700 block of North Lawndale Avenue in the East Garfield Park neighborhood. He was walking when a vehicle pulled up and someone inside fired, hitting him in the back and left arm, police said. He was taken to Stroger Hospital in good condition.
* About 3:15 p.m. on the West Side, a 43-year-old man was shot in the upper back and rib area in the 1600 block of South Harding Avenue in the Lawndale neighborhood. An attacker, described only as female, approached and demanded his property. She pulled a gun and shot him. He was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital in serious condition.
* Shortly after noon on the West Side, a 19-year-old man was shot in the back and seriously wounded in the 700 block of North Lamon Avenue in the South Austin neighborhood, according to a spokesman for the Chicago Fire Department. The man was walking when a person approached and fired shots, according to police. The shooter fled in a silver sedan. The victim was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital in serious condition, police said.
