No one was injured in a Tuesday afternoon fire that damaged a single-family home in the 800 block of South Humphrey Avenue in Oak Park, village officials said.
Fire crews arrived at the home around 3:30 p.m. Tuesday and saw smoke billowing from the home’s basement, said Oak Park spokesman David Powers.
The fire started in a furnace in the basement and spread to the first and second floors of the house along pipes and ducts, Powers said.
The entire house suffered smoke and water damage, but the fire did not penetrate the attic or roof, Powers said, leaving the home structurally intact.
Because of the bitter cold, Oak Park fire officials declared a box alarm, calling crews from Berwyn, Cicero, Forest Park and North Riverside to help fight the blaze, Powers said. Temperatures hovered below 10 degrees Tuesday.
