The family of a 1-year-old child thrown from a Chicago balcony over the weekend had previously been investigated by Illinois’ child welfare agency for neglect, officials say.
The case, involving a sibling of the child, was reported in March 2016 and referred to a private agency that was to work with the family, according to the Illinois Department of Children and Family Services. The case was closed last September.
The latest incident occurred around 6 a.m. Saturday when someone threw the 1-year-old from a South Side balcony in the 7000 block of South Paxton Avenue in the South Shore neighborhood, according to police.
The toddler was taken in serious condition to Comer Children’s Hospital, where the child was under the protective custody of the DCFS. Police did not say how high the balcony was.
Police have reported no arrests.
