The Animal Welfare League in Chicago Ridge has stopped taking stray or owner-surrendered dogs because of a recent illness among dogs at the facility, 10305 Southwest Highway, according to a news release.

The Animal Welfare League said its Chicago location, 6224 S. Wabash Ave., continues to accept dogs, and that the Chicago Ridge location continues to accept stray and owner-surrendered cats.

Dog adoptions through the Chicago Ridge location also are on hold, according to the release.

According to the release, the halt on taking in dogs began this past Saturday due to an illness among dogs at the facility “that presented itself as kennel cough but is undergoing further testing to confirm or rule out a possible bacterial or viral infection.”

Affected dogs are being “kept in an isolated area and are under the care of our medical staff,” according to the release.

“We are hopeful that this will only be for a short duration as we are taking all precautions to contain the situation,” according to the release.
