Derric and Jodi Eisenmann’s water in their new home in Mahomet, Ill., is contaminated with natural gas from a leak in an injection withdrawal well owned by Peoples Gas. In December 2016, shortly after Peoples Gas alerted the EPA and other regulatory agencies about a leak, people living nearby began reporting milky bubbles in well water sputtering from their faucets — a sign of natural gas contamination. State officials did not refer the case to the attorney general’s office until October 2017.
