A groundbreaking ceremony for the East Leyden construction project is set for 5 p.m. March 15 at the school, 3400 Rose St. Franklin Park , school district officials announced. The public will be invited.

Leyden School District 212 last year began a major construction project. A groundbreaking event took place at West Leyden at that time, and work has been underway at that school in Northlake. The construction project at West Leyden, which began last May, costs nearly $30 million, according to district officials. Officials have said the East Leyden project will cost about $50 million.

The district has posted construction information and updates on its website, leyden212.org. Among the highlights of the East Leyden project will be a new main student entrance, a new cafeteria and student commons area, a greenhouse, a new aquatic center and new fine arts wings. Among the highlights of the West Leyden project will be a building addition, a replacement and enhancement of the cafeteria, a new library, four new classrooms and four updated classrooms and an updated catering kitchen.

The screenings will take place from 8 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. on March 5 and March 6. There is no cost. For information, or to make a screening appointment, call 708-670-0836. Calls for appointment will be taken from noon to 3 p.m. Feb. 20-23. Callers should leave a message, and someone will return the call. Messages can be left in English, Spanish or Polish, according to the Early Childhood Center.

According to the center, “The purpose of the screening is to identify children who may benefit from a range of programs and services provided to preschoolers at our center. Children who participate in the screening will complete a series of activities to assess their development and readiness for school. Each child will be evaluated in the areas of language, speech, English proficiency, social skills, cognitive skills, and motor skills. A hearing and vision screening is also included. The complete screening will take approximately 45 minutes.”
