A Chicago-based medic in the Illinois National Guard was killed when an ambulance he was in crashed near Rockford on Sunday morning, according to authorities.
Illinois Army National Guard Sgt. Marcos Leonardo Gudino, 30, was a passenger in a military ambulance that crashed in the eastbound lanes of Interstate 90 near West Lane Road, according to Illinois State Police and the Illinois National Guard.
“The thoughts and prayers of the entire organization are with Sergeant Gudino’s family and friends, and the Soldiers who were closest to him,” said Maj. Gen. Richard J. Hayes, the adjutant general of the Illinois National Guard.
The driver of the ambulance was taken to an area hospital with serious injuries and had his condition stabilized, authorities said.
Gudino, who lived in Elgin, was pronounced dead after the crash. He was in a convoy returning from weekend training at Fort McCoy, Wis.
Gudino was most recently assigned in the 1st Battalion, 178th Infantry Regiment based in Chicago.
He served as a medic in the Illinois National Guard since enlisting in 2010.
Gudino graduated from St. Edwards Central Catholic High School in 2006 and earned the Army Service Ribbon and the National Defense Service Medal during his career in the Illinois National Guard.
Illinois State Police were investigating the crash.
