In what Mundelein Park District officials are calling the biggest egg hunt in some 20 years, more than 1,500 parents and small children made 10,000 plastic eggs disappear in a matter of minutes March 30.
The Spring Egg Hunt Eggstravaganza at Keith Mione Park was held in three flights. Children, organized by age, raced onto the field to gather the hollow plastic eggs containing candy and prizes.
The weather cooperated with a slightly overcast sky and moderate temperatures. Event coordinator Kelli Schillaci said 1,200 eggs were held in reserve to hand out to children who’d come up short during the three races.
Some parents complained the event was being taken over by other parents rushing onto the field with older children to maximize their egg hauls. Officials stressed that parents were expected to stay off the field, except to help the youngest and smallest children.
Schillaci said added activities at the event included a petting zoo, foot races, a crafts table and photos with an Easter Bunny character.
