An Evanston man is facing gun charges and resisting arrest, and his companion is accused of interfering with police attempts to make the arrest, Evanston police said in a news release announcing the charges.

Nicolas Moreno, 20, of the 2000 block of Dodge Avenue in Evanston, was charged with felony aggravated unlawful use of a weapon, and misdemeanor resisting/obstruction a police officer and no Firearm Owner’s Identification card.

Malik Jackson, 18, also of the 2000 block of Dodge Avenue, faced misdemeanor charges of battery to a police officer and resisting/obstruction a police officer.

Officers saw both men as part of a large group standing near Dodge Avenue and Foster Street around 11:30 p.m. July 13 as police patrolled the area “due to recent disturbances,” according to the release.

“Officers observed a large group and were concerned that another disturbance might take place,” according to the release.

As officers approached the group they saw that Moreno might be armed, the release states.

Moreno fled the scene and officers chased him, according to the release.

Police said Moreno ran onto a nearby porch and tried to hand off a gun to someone who was already there, according to the release.

Officers struggled to arrest him and take the gun, and Jackson then jumped on the officers in order to stop them, the release states.

More officers arrived to the scene and both Moreno and Jackson were arrested. A Springfield Armory .45 caliber handgun was recovered, according to the release.

Police said in the release that in addition to not having a FOID card, Moreno also did not have a Concealed Carry License.
