The death of a man who was struck and killed by a Metra Electric Line commuter train Tuesday in Homewood was ruled a suicide, authorities said.

Witnesses who were waiting on the platform at the Homewood station told investigators that just before 8 a.m. the man leaped from the platform into the path of a northbound express train, according to Metra spokeswoman Meg Reile. The engineer also told investigators he saw the man jump and immediately applied the brakes.

An autopsy determined the man, who was from Homewood, died of multiple blunt trauma, according to the Cook County medical examiner’s office.

The incident shut down the rail line between University Park and Chicago for more than an hour.
