DJ Steward was named to the roster of the McDonald’s All-American Game on Thursday, becoming the first Illinois boys player to earn the national honor in five years.
Angela Dugalic of Maine West was named to the girls roster. Steward, a senior at Young, is the first boy from Illinois to be selected for the game since Jalen Brunson of Stevenson in 2015.
Steward, a 6-foot-4 guard who signed with Duke, is the 26th-ranked college prospect in his class according to 247Sports.com’s composite ranking. He is the third player from Young to earn the McDonald’s honor, joining Jahlil Okafor in 2014 and Quentin Richardson in 1998. That matches Peoria Manual, Proviso East and St. Joseph for the third-most boys McDonald’s All-Americans from an Illinois school behind King’s five and Simeon’s four.
Nimari Burnett, a 6-4 guard from Prolific Prep in Napa, Calif., also made the boys team. He played his freshman year at Morgan Park and engaged in a memorable duel with Steward, then a freshman at Fenwick, in the Class 3A state championship game in 2017. In Morgan Park’s 69-67 overtime win, Burnett scored 24 points on 9-for-15 shooting with 6 of 10 3-pointers, while Steward scored 26 on 10-for-10 shooting for the Friars.
Morgan Park’s Adam Miller, a 6-3 guard committed to Illinois and No. 32 nationally in the composite ranking, was not selected.
Dugalic, a 6-4 senior forward, is part of a historic recruiting class at Oregon. All five five-star players in the class were named to the McDonald’s roster. Joining Dugalic, the No. 24 prospect in ESPN’s HoopGurlz rankings, as All-Americans are future teammates Te-Hina Paopao of Oceanside, Calif.; Sydney Parrish of Fishers, Ind.; Maddie Scherr of Florence, Ky.; and Kylee Watson of Linwood, N.J.
Dugalic led Maine West to a 35-0 record and the Class 4A state championship in 2019.
The McDonald’s All-American games, played in Chicago from 2011 to 2017, will be played April 1 in Houston.
