Prince Harry and Meghan Markle recently wrote letters to four of the UK’s biggest tabloids announcing their intent to not cooperate with the newspapers because of their history of publishing “distorted, false or invasive” stories about the couple and people in their lives.
One of the biggest tabloid headaches for the couple was Meghan’s dad, Thomas Markle. According to court documents obtained by CNN, Thomas was giving the couple agita over speaking to the media right up until the pair was married.
The documents contain text messages between Prince Harry and Thomas in which Harry assures his soon-to-be father-in-law that the couple is not upset with him for not attending their wedding but that speaking to the press makes life more difficult for everyone.
“Tom, Harry again! Really need to speak to u. U do not need to apologize, we understand the circumstances but ‘going public’ will only make the situation worse,” the prince texted five days before the wedding.
“If u love Meg and want to make it right please call me as there are two other options which don’t involve u having to speak to the media, who incidentally created this whole situation. So please call me so I can explain. Meg and I are not angry, we just need to speak to u. Thanks,” he wrote.
“Oh any speaking to the press WILL backfire, trust me Tom,” Prince Harry wrote in another message. “Only we can help u, as we have been trying from day 1.”
The messages were filed on Meghan’s behalf in her case against Associated Newspapers, which publishes the Mail on Sunday, which published parts of a letter Meghan wrote to her father after her wedding.
The messages are meant to refute Thomas’s claims in the press that he had attempted to reach out and patch things up with the couple.
The British royal family is a media industry unto itself in the UK, however, Meghan’s lawyers have claimed that her expectation of privacy outweighs public interest in the royal family and their relationships.
