Actress Angelina Jolie wrote to congressional leaders two weeks ago urging the federal government to ramp up food assistance for hungry children as the coronavirus crisis keeps schools across the U.S. shuttered, USA Today reported.
The 44-year-old said in her message that increasing Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program benefits would reduce the number of children who go to sleep craving food.
“While strengthening SNAP will not alleviate all of the challenges low-income families are facing during the public health emergency, it will help ensure that fewer children go to bed hungry in our country,” Jolie said in the letter, according to USA Today.
The letter was sent to leaders Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) and Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) in the House, and Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) and Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) in the Senate.
