More than 200 died of COVID-19 in immediate north and west suburbs; Des Plaines reports highest number of deaths with 40, followed by Niles with 39

The number of people dying of COVID-19 in local suburbs continued to grow this week. Seventeen north and west suburbs (listed below) reported a total of 229 deaths related to COVID-19 since the pandemic began in March, according to data from the Cook County Department of Public Health and the county Medical Examiner’s Office.

Greater Des Plaines had the highest number of COVID-19 deaths, with 40 reported as of May 5. The village of Niles followed with 39 deaths, according to county data.

Des Plaines had the highest number of COVID-19 cases in the area as well, with 874 reported as of May 5, according to the health department.

Des Plaines numbers include residents of unincorporated areas in Maine Township and Elk Grove Township that have Des Plaines addresses, the Cook County Department of Public Health said.

Cicero remained the Cook County suburb with the highest number of confirmed COVID-19 cases, jumping from 899 on April 28 to 1,325 on May 5, according to the Cook County Health Department.

There were 27 deaths reported in the west suburb, the department said.

The following shows the number of confirmed COVID-19 cases within 17 North and West suburban Cook County communities as of May 5, with a comparison to the cases reported a week earlier on April 28:

* Des Plaines: 874, up from 666; 40 deaths

* Skokie: 523, up from 419; 20 deaths

* Niles: 450, up from 277; 39 deaths.

* Evanston: 397, up from 324; 11 deaths.

* Glenview: 304, up from 257; 24 deaths

* Elmwood Park: 242, up from 160; 12 deaths.

* Oak Park: 191, up from 156; 12 deaths

* Franklin Park, 179, up from 111; 6 deaths.

* Park Ridge: 172, up from 149; 21 deaths.

* Morton Grove: 158, up from 127; 7 deaths.

* Norridge: 124, up from 86; 13 deaths.

* Lincolnwood: 114, up from 95; 19 deaths.

* Northlake: 108, up from 84; 0 deaths.

* Harwood Heights: 73, up from 49; 4 deaths.

* River Grove: 56, up from 46; 2 deaths.

* River Forest: 35, up from 25; 0 deaths.

* Rosemont: 33, up from 30; 0 deaths.
