A staff member at a second Catholic school in Park Ridge has tested positive for COVID-19 as the school prepares to open for in-classroom learning.

The staff member, who is employed at St. Paul of the Cross Catholic School, tested positive on Aug. 11, said Manuel Gonzales, a spokesman for the Archdiocese of Chicago.

The individual and two other employees were sent home to quarantine for 14 days and the school was sanitized, Gonzales said.

The staff member’s position within the school was not specified.

On Aug. 18, families of Mary, Seat of Wisdom Catholic School in Park Ridge were notified by email that a school administrator there had tested positive for COVID-19 after falling ill the previous week. In response, a decision was made to postpone the start of the school year from Aug. 25 to Sept. 8, families were told.

As of Friday, there were no plans to adjust the start of the school year at St. Paul of the Cross, Gonzales said in an email.

The first day of in-person learning is scheduled to begin Aug. 27, according to the school calendar, though students will take part in orientation days on Aug. 25 and Aug. 26.

St. Paul of the Cross Principal Erika Mickelburgh could not be reached for comment Friday.

Unlike most public school systems in the Chicago area, which are starting the new school year with remote learning due to COVID-19 concerns, schools in the Archdiocese of Chicago are planning for traditional, in-classroom learning or remote learning options for parents who choose them.
