Members of a Lincolnwood family were robbed of their car and other valuables at gunpoint shortly after pulling into a residential driveway over Thanksgiving weekend, police said.
The carjacking occurred around 9:40 p.m. Nov. 27 on the 3900 block of Estes Avenue, Lincolnwood police said in a news release.
Police Chief Jay Parrott said two men, each armed with a handgun, approached the driver and passenger of the 2012 white Audi Q7 and robbed them of their cellphones, as well as the keys to the car and the driver’s wallet.
The suspects then stole the Audi and fled north on Crawford Avenue, police said.
In addition to the driver and his wife, children were present at the time of the carjacking, but Parrott declined to specify how many.
The suspects arrived at the scene of the carjacking in what was described only as a “red sedan,” which was driven by a woman, police said. That car also fled the scene after the carjacking, according to police.
The Audi Q7 was recovered on the morning of Nov. 28 on the 6100 block of South Michigan Avenue in Chicago, Parrott said.
“The whole Chicago area has seen an increasing in carjackings,” Parrott said, describing many of these crimes as similar to the one reported in Lincolnwood.
In neighboring Morton Grove, a man was robbed of his car while pumping gas at the corner of Dempster Street and Central Avenue on Sunday night, police said. Two teenagers were apprehended after a pursuit by Illinois State Police that ended in a crash near Lansing, the Morton Grove Police Department said.
Residents are encouraged to contact Lincolnwood police if they see anything suspicious or out of the ordinary in their neighborhoods, Parrott said.
“The residents are our eyes and ears,” he said. “They know who belongs on their block more than we do.”
