A Whiting man faces charges after stabbing his girlfriend’s housemate when the man intervened in their screaming match, charges show.
Robert Szewczyk, Jr., 36, was charged Wednesday after the Jan. 19 incident on the 2300 block of White Oak Avenue in Hammond, charging documents show.
The couple had dated for four months, while Szewczyk and the victim, who lived there in the attic, knew each other for a year, she told police.
Police officers arrived to find the victim “covered in blood” with the couple arguing so intently, they ignored when he walked through the open door, charges state. The officer eventually arrested Szewczyk taking him out in handcuffs, while other police found a black knife in his right pocket that appeared covered with blood.
The victim told police Szewczyk stabbed him eight times in the neck and leg. He was taken via ambulance to Clark High School’s football field and airlifted to the University of Chicago.
Earlier that day, all three went to Port Side Pub, 1516 Indianapolis Blvd., in Whiting to celebrate a friend’s birthday, the woman told police. The victim returned home while Szewczyk and the woman stopped by a friend’s house.
Szewczyk got angry they took so long there and they fought going home, a report said. The victim intervened as the couple argued in their bedroom, saying Szewczyk shouldn’t talk to her like that, and Szewczyk allegedly pulled out a black knife and started stabbing him, charges show.
The victim called 911. The woman tried to keep Szewczyk in the bedroom and tended to the victim’s neck wounds until police came, records state. She claimed Szewczyk kept a knife because he was “ex-military,” documents state.
He was charged with attempted murder, battery by means of a deadly weapon, battery resulting in serious bodily injury.
Szewczyk is in custody with a bond set at $10,000 cash surety.
His next court date hasn’t been set.
