Construction is underway on phase two of a $13 million roadway improvement project at Thompson Boulevard and Brandywyn Lane in Buffalo Grove and area residents can expect detours in the days ahead.
This next phase of the three-year project, funded in part by 9.8 million in federal dollars, is expected to be completed on Nov. 13, according to village engineers. The improvements are expected to include pavement base and surface removal, replacement of the roadway, as well as curb replacement, storm sewer and sidewalk improvements. The improvements will be made to Thompson Boulevard from Buffalo Grove Road to Weiland Road, and on Brandywyn Lane from Aptakisic Road to Prairie Road, according to village engineers.
“The project was necessary due to the pavement condition on these two streets,” said village engineer Darren T. Monico. “The village saw an opportunity to improve the streets and use federal funding in the process.”
The Buffalo Grove Public Works Department successfully applied to make these roads eligible for federal funding and then began the federal design process in 2014, Monico said. Work on the project, he said, is split over three years – into manageable portions due to its size and funding – while limiting disturbances to area residents. The final phase of the project is expected to be completed next year, he said.
“It will be a full road construction process and we will do our best to limit disturbance and interruptions to our residents, but we appreciate their patience while we work with the contractor to give them a new, safe road,” Monico said.
The road will be open to residents and they will not lose access to their driveways, except when there is curb work or apron work right in front of their homes, Monico said. The roadway portion near Meridian School is expected to be completed as much as possible during the summer to limit disruption when the new school year starts in the fall.
He confirmed water mains are not part of this project and this construction was not initiated for flood mitigation.
