Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...

Dear Dr. June,

I am a single man in my late 40s and have never been married. Though I have been in a few serious relationships, none have worked out. I’ve looked within with the help of counseling because I felt that there was something missing. I have a successful career, excellent friendships and good family dynamics. I just cannot figure out why my romantic relationships have not been fulfilling. What other aspects of me should I work on?

— No Romance in Miami

Dear No Romance:

I have a question for you. Did you follow through on the idea of the counselor? I’m sure there were some ideas put on the table. You would have to pick them up and give it a try. Of course, you should have an open mind with your willingness to follow through; otherwise, trying the suggestions won’t be helpful.

That brings me to my next question. Are you open? No one is perfect, you should know. In sharing what you consider the good things you have to offer, start being honest with yourself about the shortcomings you bring to the table. It appears you realize there may be some since you ask what aspects you should work on. The person who really knows the answer to that question is you. Yes, it’s time for you to start facing it.

Also, what are you looking for? Is it a clone of you? Rarely does that work. So, take time to get to know the ladies you meet and appreciate what they have to offer instead of being too focused on yourself. Maybe then you can bond on a romantic level and find fulfillment. It’s difficult to make a love connection with another when you only live within your bubble. Time to burst the bubble. Lighten up, try something different and open your heart.
