A man died and a teenage boy was rescued after their car became submerged in the Calumet River Sunday night in Hegewisch on Chicago’s Far South Side.
As the bridge was going up at South Torrence Avenue north of 126th Street, witnesses saw a white car drive through a retention net and plunge into the water around 7 p.m., according to Chicago police.
A passing boat rescued the 16-year-old boy, who was in good condition, according to initial reports from police. Divers later pulled the man from the water and he was taken to University of Chicago Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead at 9:20 p.m.

He was identified as Jaime Navarro, of Calumet City, according to information released by the medical examiner’s office. Chicago police had listed his age as 38.
Further information was not released, and police said they were investigating. The Police Department tweeted that its marine unit, the Chicago Fire Department and the U.S. Coast Guard were all involved in the response.
The medical examiner’s office did not immediately determine a cause of death for Navarro on Monday following an autopsy, instead marking the case pending further investigation.
