Learning how to safely install a car seat might be one of the most daunting tasks on new parents’ seemingly endless to-do lists. While it sounds easy enough, changing regulations and a plethora of models make car seat installation complicated. And this isn’t something you want to get wrong. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, almost half of all car seats are installed incorrectly.
Keeping your little one safe is essential. That means learning how to properly install a car seat and choosing the best type for your child at each age.
Important car seat information
There are multiple types of car seats and methods for installing them. Each variation suits a particular age and weight and should be swapped out as your child grows. The typical progression is from rear-facing to forward-facing to booster seat. Check your state laws for when to transition from rear- to forward-facing. Booster seats are generally used once your child reaches four to five years of age or 40 pounds.
Car seat types
Infant-only car seats accommodate babies from birth to when they reach 30-35 pounds. These are only rear-facing. Since you’re able to take the entire seat in and out of the car without waking your baby, it’s an excellent choice for newborns.
Convertible car seats are rear or forward-facing. They can be used for infants and toddlers until they are ready to switch to a booster seat.
Combination car seats are also known as all-in-one or three-in-one car seats. They usually transition from rear-facing to forward-facing to a booster.
The next step after a car seat is a booster. Whether you use a high-back booster or backless booster depends on your child’s height and weight. Backless boosters make the most sense for older children or in smaller cars where a high-back booster won’t fit. If you do use a backless booster, your child’s ears must align with the top of your vehicle’s seat back to protect their head and neck from injury. Additionally, your car must have headrests if you use a backless booster.
Car seat installation methods
Using a seat belt: All car seats can be properly and safely installed with a vehicle’s seat belt. This can be your best option if your anchors are difficult to find, are non-existent or if your car model is earlier than 2002.
Lower Anchors and Tethers for Children: Because seat belts and locking mechanisms differ from one car to the next, the LATCH system was designed to simplify car-seat installation. All cars newer than 2002 must be compatible with the LATCH system. When using the LATCH system, you do not use the seat belt.
Your car has lower anchors and top tether anchors built into its seat architecture. The lower anchors are bars located where the rear seatback and seat cushions meet. Depending on the vehicle, the top anchors are metal loops located on the floor, under the seat, on the ceiling or back of the seat. Car seats will then have accompanying lower anchor straps and top tether straps that affix to these anchors. Follow your car seat’s manual to ensure safe installation using the LATCH system.
How to install a car seat
While the middle of the back seat is considered the safest location, some vehicles are only compatible with the LATCH system on the side seats. If you can’t get a tight fit, it’s completely safe to install your car seat on a side seat.
Installing a rear-facing car seat using the LATCH system
Locate your lower anchors. Do not double up with the seat belt as this has neither been tested nor approved.
When using an infant-only car seat, only install the base of the seat.
Find the lower-anchors straps on your car seat and secure them to the lower anchors in your vehicle. Make sure the straps are not twisted to get the tightest fit.
Push down on the car seat as hard as you can while tightening the straps to reduce slack.
Pay attention to the rear-facing angle indicator on the car seat to ensure you have installed the seat at the correct angle. This is generally around 45 degrees but consult your car seat’s manual to be sure.
Remember that rear-facing seats are the safest option and are recommended for as long as possible. If you’re concerned about not seeing your child, you can buy a car seat mirror.
Installing a forward-facing seat using the LATCH system
Locate the lower anchor and top tethers in your vehicle.
Connect the car seat’s lower-anchor straps to the car’s lower anchors. Make sure the strap is not twisted.
Press down on the car seat firmly while continuing to tighten the straps to reduce slack.
Connect the top tethers to the top anchors on your car.
Installing a car seat using the seat belt
Thread the seat belt through the car seat’s belt path, ensuring the belt is not twisted, and buckle it.
Lock the seat belt by pulling it all the way out of the retractor to engage your car’s locking mechanism.
Push down on the car seat as much as you can and feed the seat belt back into the retractor, pulling up and out while feeding to tighten it further.
For a rear-facing seat, look at the angle indicator to ensure you have installed the seat at the correct angle.
For a forward-facing seat, also connect the tether strap to your vehicle’s top tether anchor.
Regardless of the car seat installation method or position, your car seat or base must not move front-to-back or side-to-side more than one inch. Rock the seat after installation to verify that it is rigid and snuck in position.
