PNW Sinai Forum announces 68th season speakers
The Purdue University Northwest (PNW) will kick off the 68th Sinai Forum series season with Deborah Birx, MD, medical expert and former White House Coronavirus Response Coordinator, at 4 p.m. on Oct. 17. In addition to Birx, the speakers series will feature Silicon Valley icon Steve Wozniak, civil rights lawyer and social justice activist Bryan Stevenson, Holocaust survivor Max Eisen, and nature photographer Paul Nicklen. This season will be offered in person with an option to attend virtually. Regular season series tickets with general seating for all five programs are $175. Patron season series tickets, including reserved seating and an exclusive reception with speakers before each program are $300. Both patron and regular level season tickets will include a link for each program to allow for virtual viewing, if preferred. Virtual tickets are $100 and will allow for virtual viewing only via a link provided for each program. Tickets for the general public go on sale starting July 13 at pnw.edu/sinai-forum.
Mobile food basket giveaway
The Chakula Food Pantry Ministry will host a free mobile food basket giveaway from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday while supplies last at Trinity United Church of Christ-Gary, 1276 W. 20th Ave. In addition to the food give-away, Somebody’s Clothing Ministry will be giving away toiletries. Service helps adults earn their high school diplomas
Merrillville Adult Education (MAE) can help individuals earn their high school equivalency credentials by preparing them to complete the High School Equivalency Test (HiSET) exam. Instruction is available Mondays through Thursdays. The next class session begins Tuesday. Preparation classes are not required prior to taking the HiSET. Upcoming 2021 HiSET test dates include: July 19 and 20, registration deadline July 15; Aug. 4 and 5, registration deadline July 29; Aug. 18 and 19, registration deadline Aug. 12; Sept. 1 and 2, registration deadline Aug. 26; Sept. 15 and 16, registration deadline Sept. 9; Sept. 29 and 30, registration deadline Sept. 23; Oct. 12 and 13, registration deadline Oct. 7; Oct. 27 and 28, registration deadline Oct. 21; and Dec. 8 and 9, registration deadline Dec. 2. The State of Indiana has changed from the Test Assessing Secondary Completion (TASC) test. Those who have not passed all five subjects on the TASC test have until Sept. 30 to successfully complete the test. Testing dates to complete TASC subjects include: July 19 and 20, registration deadline July 15; Aug. 4 and 5, registration deadline July 29; Sept. 1 and 2, registration deadline Aug. 26; and Sept. 15 and 16, registration deadline Sept. 9. Library offers programs for all ages
The Lake County Public Library system offers a variety of upcoming programs. The Munster Branch will host “Bingo for Books!” for children from 10 to 11 a.m. Tuesday via the Munster Zoom Room. Jewelry fundraiser at St. Mary Medical Center
St. Mary Medical Center Auxiliary will host the HCI $7 Sale from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. on July 15 and from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. on July 16 in Rooms 3 and 3A near the west entrance to the hospital, 1500 S. Lake Park Ave., Hobart. This fundraiser will feature a variety of jewelry and other accessories. A percentage of the proceeds from the sale will go to the Auxiliary in support of the 2022 Scholarship Fund that benefits students pursuing a career in the medical field.
